It’s been five years since Donald Trump ignored the advice of his own appointed officials (and a bunch of knowledgeable outsiders) and violated the last best negotiated chance to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear–capable country: the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Most serious people knew violating the deal was a bad idea. Rational people told him it was a bad idea. And only his most craven and misguided supporters in DC and in Israel backed him in betraying the trust of our allies, and opening the door for Iran to advance to the verge of building nuclear weapons. When the JCPOA was in full force, it would have taken Iran at least 1 year to violate the agreement and acquire enough nuclear material for a nuclear weapon. Today, it could do so in a matter of days.
So, what have we learned:
1) Diplomacy works if you let it. The deal was working. Anyone who says otherwise is not telling you the truth.
