Where Have All the Nuclear Geeks Gone
Do we have the expert we need to handle today's nuclear dangers?
My friend and colleague Bryan Bender wrote a very provocative piece on July 27th in Politico asking where the nuclear weapons experts are. If we are indeed entering a new nuclear age, does the country have the expertise needed to navigate this period safely?
It is a good question. What kind of skills do we need to figure out how to deter Russia and China? If we get a chance to negotiate agreements with them, who will advice the government on how to do that? Do we have enough insight into how each country thinks to get to that point? Regardless of whether you think deterrence and defeat or engagement and agreement is the way to go, you want people who know what nuclear weapons are and how to address these specific dangers are. You don’t go to a veterinarian for brain surgery.
